Stemball Backing Shells are specialized
Tangs for use with a variety of Wire and Rod
Stemball fittings.
Backing Shells are designed to fit through a mounting slot in the mast while already attached
to a piece of
Rigging with a Stemball fitting; they are then fastened from the outside using one or more screws or
rivets.
One or more Stemball Cup Washers are often
required.
Stemball Backing Shells are commonly used with Swage and Swageless (mechanical) wire fittings and
with
specialized Rod Rigging fittings. Note: The Stemball Backing Shell becomes a part of the Rigging during assembly, as it must be put onto the Wire (or Rod) before the ends are attached. In all cases the Backing Shell must be removed from the mast to take the rigging off. When replacing Rigging it is recommended that the Stemball Backing Shells (and any Cup Washers) also be replaced, as interior wear is unavoidable in the design. Stemball Backing Shell Tangs come in Four basic Types. Formed SS Backing Shells are identified by the shape of the portion of the Tang that protrudes from the Mast after installation.
